What is Structural Integration?

"When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself."
Ida P. Rolf

What is structure? Sructure is the organization of many smaller parts to create a stronger whole.

What is structure in your Body? Ideally it is a body that feels support without effort.

Structural Integration's goal is just that, integrate structure back into the body's posture so that it will have support without effort.A balanced body uses gravity as a conduit of support. where an unbalance body is dragged down by gravity and is forced into a compensated posture in order to stand upright.

A SI Practitioner uses a series of 10 sessions to rebalance the body. Each 10 Series is structured in it's format but is modified to be as unique as the person walking through the door. The practitioner uses their knowledge and skill to assess and manipulate the connective tissue matrix that encompasses every inch of skin, muscle and viscera in the body.

It is this connective tissue that shows our posture, our range of motion, even our emotional tension. This is the level we will bring new awareness and change.

Who does Structural Integration Help?

Whether you are a desk jockey, work on a job site, save lives in a hospital, teach America’s youth, or running a household your body needs to be in balance.  The repetitive motions and stresses of each of these very important jobs cause the human body to drop into an imbalanced structure.  If you add that to gravity pushing down on you then many of the pains you experience on a daily basis are not so hard to grasp.  Our world today is not made to work with the body so the body needs tuning up now and again to work with the world. You will find your job and life easier to handle when you no longer need to force yourself to stand up straight.  Structural Integration is not a replacement for exercise and healthy eating, but you may find yourself more willing to walk to the store and buy an apple if you know it isn’t going to hurt when you stand up.  I’m here to change your life, not just your day!.

What is a Session Like?

Each session is an aggressive, hands on and interactive with the client.  Sessions are performed in a private room making use of a massage table and a Structural Integration bench.  Male clients are in boxer briefs or basketball shorts; female clients a sports bra and workout shorts is preferable but the work can be done with loose fitting clothes (we work within your comfort level.)  The work itself is done within a person’s tolerance level, often times feeling great as tissues and muscles are released from their tight restrictions.  In some areas of the body where tissue is particularly adhered a feeling of stretching or a light burning will be felt as the tissue is lengthened and freed (this feeling is common and perfectly normal.)  Clients are directed through a series of movements as the SI practitioner holds the tissue so that the client is freed through their full range of motion, also allowing the client to control the amount of sensation they feel by how fast they move.  Although not required, pictures are highly suggested to be taken before the first session and after each following session so both the client and SI practitioner may track the progress.  These pictures are the property of the client and are protected by federal privacy law unless otherwise released by the client.  Single sessions are available for spot work, but to feel the best results the full ten sessions is suggested.  Each session builds upon the previous to create total balance.

Young Athletes

For many adults getting their bodies back on track is tough.  Time and gravity have slowly pulled them further away from their line and now at 30, 40, 50, or 60 they are asking, “When did I lose my posture?” By addressing structural imbalance during the developmental stage we can prevent many of the pains and injuries that life and gravity may cause. This becomes particularly crucial in the young athlete. The repetitive strains of an active child can show as their posture begins to sag and worsen through his/her adult life.  This may start from an early sports injury, emotional trauma, daily computer habits, mimicking the posture and movements of an unbalanced parent, or any combination of the four.  Working to correct these imbalances will help keep the child’s tissue elastic and free of restriction so they can move and grow with the support of gravity, not fighting it as most of us do
.

Dance

Do you feel as if you’ve reached a wall with your dance?  It’s as if you know what to do and you know what the instructor is telling you, but your body just won’t allow you to do the movement or pose asked of you. It’s not an issue of strength and weakness; it’s an issue of restriction.  Structural Integration creates freedom. It allows the body to drop back into place, not only allowing you a new freedom of movement and sense of stability, but also correcting improper muscle use which has been reinforcing bad habits. You will no longer have to concentrate on how to be “relaxed” it will just happen, rejuvenating a career you thought was lost, or pushing you past a barrier that you just can’t get your hands around.

Actors

Similar to Dancers, you are often asked to “RELAX and just be natural,” “let your body go,” “breathe,” but no matter what you do, your body will not just let go. It’s not fault, your body has fought gravity and it should be no surprise that you are losing. Imagine that you are wearing a wet suit just under your skin, that is the superficial fascia layer and it has become tight around your body pulling you in certain areas and bringing you out of balance. It feels natural to slump your shoulders, hyper-extend your knees, let your feet turn in or out; so it’s no wonder that standing upright takes effort. Posture means to place, to position, to develop, to adopt, to assume; as an actor these are the ingredients to who you are in each role. Structural Integration allows you to have effortless posture and movement, the freedom you need to advance your acting career to the next step and spend your energy on acting, not standing.

Yoga/Pilates

Yoga and Pilates both make use of a multifaceted approach of meditation, exercise, breathing exercises, and life principles to both free up and control the mind/body connection. Structural Integration balances the body, freeing it from restriction so the mind can be free as well.  It’s an amazing aid for the beginning yoga client by giving them a jump start in achieving positions, or the beginning pilates client who is having trouble moving properly because the body wants to pull them in a certain direction. For the advanced yoga/pilates student you may have trouble achieving a pose or feeling pain from exercise even though you are physically fit, Structural Integration can give you the missing freedom you are looking for, and simultaneously prevent or cure the pains that an unbalanced body structure can feel.

Runners/Tri-athletes

Any runner at some point has felt either low back pain, knee pain, shin splints, or just general joint pain. You can times that by three for the tri-athlete warriors. What if you could alleviate these pains, prevent future pain, and increase your lung capacity at the same time? That is would Structural Integration can provide. All of these pains come from the impact of running, standing, and moving in an unbalanced body. The shock felt every time your foot contacts the ground is being absorbed by just one or two joints instead of the entire body as nature designed it.  Structural Integration balances the structure for maximum efficiency. It balances the head and shoulders on top of the rib cage so gravity has a direct path to the ground. It frees and opens the ribs and spine to allow the lungs to inhale and exhale with ease. It balances the pelvis over the legs and under the torso, frees the hips to move without restriction, tracks the knees so they move in a proper direction, and balances the ankles and arches of the foot so the body is supported properly from the ground up. It doesn’t just make you a better athlete; it makes you better at living..

Weekend Warriors

You work hard and play harder. In that two and a half day span you fit in a full week’s worth of activity, and a week’s worth of damage to your body. This weekly abuse has built up and now you are frustrated because you no longer can be the weekend warrior you were. This is where Structural Integration comes into play. With the soft tissue techniques used scar tissue and restriction is stripped away leaving a new decompressed and balanced body. With a new balance the activities you partook in before now do not impact your joints as they did before. You may even find yourself with more energy for living, working, and of course playing with much more vigor and ease.
